OXO Cromwell

One of the OXO adverts from the 1930s or 40s, which used historical figures and events to promote their products. The advert features a portrait of Oliver Cromwell, who was the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1653 to 1658, after the execution of King Charles I. The advert compares Cromwell’s role as the protector of the commonwealth to OXO’s role as the protector of the common-health, suggesting that OXO can provide nourishment and warmth to the people. The advert probably aimed to appeal to the patriotic and religious sentiments of the British public, who were facing the challenges of war and economic hardship.

The advert also has a rhyme that says:

Cromwell was the protector of the Commonwealth

OXO is the protector of the common-health

So when you’re feeling cold and blue

A cup of OXO’s good for you
