The Boy from Barnardo’s (1938)


The Boy from Barnardo's is about Geoffrey Braemer, a young boy played by Freddie Bartholomew. Geoffrey is a British boys' school student, and the film primarily follows his experiences and adventures in this setting. Mickey Rooney and Charles Coburn also play significant roles in the film.

The film was directed by Sam Wood and released by MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). 


The Boy from Barnardo’s shows the behind-the-scenes of a working title, which was later published as 'Lord Jeff'. 

 

  • A Story Inspired by Thomas John Barnardo

 

The film is based on the life of Thomas John Barnardo, a philanthropist who founded homes for orphaned children in the 19th century.

 

The story was also adapted into a radio play with Cedric Hardwicke as the narrator in 1939.

Mickey Rooney had a long and prolific career, appearing in more than 300 films and winning many awards. He was one of the last surviving stars of the silent film era. One of Mickey Rooney’s greatest awards was the Academy Honorary Award that he received in 1983, in recognition of his 50 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances.
